Finances
The department is supported solely by subscriptions. Due to the high population density of our district, we are able to maintain one of the lowest subscription rates in the area. Homeowners pay $35.00 per year, regardless of the size or value of the property. Industrial properties are charged according to size, and commercial property is charged $100.00 per year. The department receives no tax money. Our billing is done by Aiken County by including the subscription fee on the annual property tax bill sent to homeowners. Even though our fee is not a tax, it is usually paid along with the taxes. The department has income of approximately $260,000 per year. With the exception of Ladder 3, the department is debt free. Budget surpluses are either invested or used to modernize equipment. The department also receives about $26,000 per year from the state through the state association. The funds represent 1% of all the hazard insurance premiums paid in the district. These funds cannot be used for equipment, apparatus, or any other cost of operating the department. The funds are used for meals, incentive awards, uniforms, and other such expenses.
